The current procedure for the AFL Finals Series in the Final 8 system. The Final 8 has been in place since the 1994 season, but was tweaked in 2000 to make it more fairer.
Prior to the 1994 season there were several systems including a top 4, top 5 and top 6, but as the league has expanded to 16 teams the now, the top 8 system is the best method.
The current Finals Series goes for 4 weeks with 9 games and aims at providing teams who finish higher on the ladder with an advantage. The Top 4 sides will receive a double chance in week 1, while the Top 2 sides each get a home final.
