The Australian Football League (AFL) is Australia's most popular sport in terms of audience and is in the top 3 in the world for average gate attendances with an average crowd of over 35,000 per game.
Aussie Rules football, as it is most commonly known, was formed in 1897 under the title Victorian Football League (VFL) which was comprised of Victorian clubs, but with the introduction several interstate clubs the league was renamed to the AFL in 1990 as it turned into a National sport.
Currently there are 16 clubs in the competition with the home & away season consisting of 22 rounds of matches. A round consists of 8 games spread over a weekend, usually Friday night through to Sunday night, with games also played on public holidays. Once the home & away season is completed there is a finals series, more info on the Finals here.
With the AFL agreeing to a landmark $750M deal with the Seven/Ten/Foxtel networks, the league has never been stronger financially, plus with record crowds turning through the gates the league will only continue to grow bigger and stronger as time goes on.
