The Miss Universe contest is held yearly and is a very popular event with millions worldwide watching. The first ever Miss Universe pageant was held in Long Beach, California in 1952. The competition had 29 entrants and was taken out by Finland's Armi Kuusela.
The tournament, now sponsored by billionaire Donald Trump and attracting attention and contestants from all corners of the globe, is internationally recognised as a platform for ambitious women to build their profile. Australian Jennifer Hawkins won the 2003 pageant and has gone onto stardom in this country as a successful model and media personality, but her win put the Miss Universe pageant on the map in Australia and it has been hugely popular in this country ever since.
