Next Running: 25th October 2008
The Cox Plate is a thoroughbred race held annually at Mooney Valley in late October and is a Group 1 standard race. The race is held by Mooney Valley Racing Club and named after the clubs founder W.S. Cox. The Cox Plate is run over 2,040 metres on turf and is for three year olds and over.
The Cox Plate is widely regarded as the Weight for Age championship of Australia and carries Australia's richest weight for age prize, which in 2006 was $3,000,000.
In 1999 The Cox Plate was included in the Emirates World Series Racing Championship which is basically a global grand prix of horse racing. Other races under this World Series include the Japan Cup, Dubai World Cup & King George IV and Queen Elizabeth Stakes held in Ascot, so it goes to show how big a race it is considered.
There is a long list of horses who have made a name for themselves by winning The Cox Plate and some of these names include Phar Lap, Sunline, Makybe Diva, Fields of Omagh, Northerly and Kingston Town.

Main Contenders for the Cox Plate
El Segundo C W Little
This horse showed what he is capable of in the Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes, he can be a real weight for age top performer . However in his recent run in the Turnbull Stakes over 2000m he unfortunately seemed to flatten out after a good start. He is now six years old and perhaps found the distance a bit to much, maybe he would go better over a shorter distance? Having said that if he arrives on form he is well capable of performing under pressure when asked and could well stay off any challenge, he can on his day match the very best.

Haradasun A J Vasil
Is always up there with the leaders but usually ends up with a place win of late. He does however look very well at the moment, he turned up at his Flemington debut for the Turnbull Stakes looking incredible. He came third in this race but kept fighting all the way, this was a great trial and things look very promising for the Cox Plate. He has in the past produced some blistering runs, he looks the part and there is better to come from this four year old. The odds available seem good for such a talented and promising horse and when you consider he beat El Segundo, Marasco and Efficient in the Turnbull, he must be one to consider.

Miss Finland D. Hayes
One of the best fillies in training at the moment and one that improves with every run. Her confidence is at a high and although she narrowly missed out on victory in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield over 1800m in September she fought hard in the closing stages. The distance should be well suited, she seems to be able to cope with most, she is most impressive and is well worthy of starting favourite here. The question to ask is can she cope with the mights of El Segundo and Marasco? Those with connections strongly believe that she can and she could win almost everything she is trained for. She looks in fine form at the moment thats for sure and come race day if she can find just a little more she will be well on her way to victory.
