Next Running: 1st November 2008
Victorian Derby Day is one of the biggest and most prestigious racing events on the Calendar in Australia and is held at Flemington on the Saturday before the Melbourne Cup. It was first run in 1855 and is traditionally Race No.6 at the race meeting.
Also, Victorian Derby Day is the only All-Group race day in Australia and amazingly $4.1 million in prize money was on the cards at last years events over the 9 races.
The Victorian Derby is the feature race and is a classic Group 1 staying test for 3 year olds over 2,500 metres.
To describe how big a day Victorian Derby Day is, over 129,000 people came through the gates in 2006 for the meeting which broke the Flemington crowd record which was previously held by the 2003 Melbourne Cup.
Derby Day is famous for the 'Fashion on the Fields' celebration and has become a men's day in the fashion stakes recently. Traditionally Black and White is worn on this day.

Main Contenders for the Victoria Derby
| Kibbutz D Hayes |
Has become one of the favourites here after coming second to Marching in the AAMI Vase at Moonee Valley. There dosent seem to be a dominant three year old around at the minute but this horse is clearly popular with the punters. Connections feel the distance will be no bother for him and some believe the race is as good as over. Certainly if he turns up looking as good as he did at Moonee Valley he will be in for a strong run.
|
| Littorio N A Blackiston |
This gelding has had five starts in his career with one win and one place. He came fifth in the Norman Robinson Stakes at Caulfield over 2000m. He was unlucky however getting held up at the start, he made up for it in the closing stages getting better and better. The extra distance of the Derby should suit him and he could prove a real challenger.
|
| Marching J R Hawkes |
Won the AAMI Vase infront of Kibbutz and has a great draw here in barrier two. He is expected to be in front for most of the race. He is a horse that rarely makes mistakes and is known to be bombproof and one that can run straight. Certainly it is hard to see what can beat him off the start and if he succeeds then the likes of Kibbutz, Villain and Littorio will have their work cut out to catch him.
|
| Villain D T O'Brien |
Won the Super Impose Stakes at Flemington in fine style. He managed to stay the pace and fought off his rivals with ease. This race was an important one as many winners here have gone on to win the Derby hence the odds. He is in good form at the minute and should manage the extra distance of the Derby. He certainly showed he has great acceleration and could well outstay his rivals here as well.
