The Bathurst 1000 is Round 10 of the 2008 V8 Supercars Championship and is known as the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 for sponsorship reasons. Its Australia's most popular domestic car race with a television viewing audience of one million plus each year and an attendance of tens of thousands of people.
The race is held at Mount Panorama Circuit in Bathurst, New South Wales. Its raced over a distance of 1,000 kilometres which is a total of 61 laps. Fans and broadcasters commonly refer to the Bathurst 1000 as 'The Great Race' and its widely regarded as the pinnacle of Australian motorsport. The winners of the race receive the Peter Brock Trophy, named in honor of the former great who has won a record 9 Bathurst's.
Mount Panorama is one of the most picturesque racing circuits on the V8 racing calendar. The race starts and ends at different points and has several famous turns and corners. Hell Corner is the first corner of the circuit which has claimed many scalps, Griffins Bend is another that has seen many high speed crashes. Forrest Elbow is the slowest point of the track, while Mountain Straight sees speeds of 255 km/h and Conrad Straight speeds of 300km/h. Quite often Kangaroos can be seen on the track.
