The Japanese Grand Prix is part of the Formula One Championship calendar and held annually at the fabulous Suzuka Circuit and the Fuji Speedway, alternating each year. It is one of the most popular events on the Formula One calendar for several reasons including the fast paced and exciting action of the Suzuka Circuit, and also the fact that it is always one of the last races of the schedule meaning many Championship crowns have been won.
The Japanese Grand Prix has been in existence since 1963, but was only made a part of the Formula One Championship in 1976. Between the years of 1978 and 1986, the Japanese Grand Prix was not held due to a tragic collision between Gilles Villeneuve and Ronnie Peterson saw Villeneuve's Ferrari fly into a restricted area and killing two spectators.
The event has been staged at Suzuka for the majority of the its life, but it was announced that in 2006 that the venue of the Japanese Grand Prix would alternate each year with Suzuka and the Fuji Speedway. Both tracks are very popular, Suzuka is one of the only racetracks in the world to feature a figure 8 layout and contains many challenging turns and curves, while the Fuji Speedway features amazing scenery and contains a massive straight which sees high speeds.
