2011 AFL Finals Series

The AFL Finals Series is one of the key highlights on the Australian sporting calendar. The Finals run each year in September for four weeks, with the season culminating with the Grand Final on the last Saturday in September.

There are 9 matches played in the finals between the top eight sides from the home and away season. Betting on the finals is pretty huge too, so use this page as a quick guide for all your betting needs.

How does the finals series work?

The current Finals Series is pretty easy to follow. In Week 1 the top four teams each receive a double chance in the Qualifying Final, while the bottom four teams will face Elimination Finals. The Two Elimination Final winners will then take on the two Qualifying Final winners in Week 2 for the Semi Finals, and so forth.

AFL Finals Series Description

Who will win the 2011 AFL Premiership?

In over a century of the AFL/VFL the premiership winner has usually come from the team who has finished either first or second on the ladder at the end of the home and away season. In fact 84% of premiership winners finished top two during the season.

The minor premier has gone on to win the premiership 64 times in history which is 56% of the time, while second place has won it 32 times. The team finishing third has won the premiership only 10 times, while fourth and fifth have produced 6 and 2 winners respectively. No team finishing sixth or higher has been successful.

So in 2011 if you back Collingwood or Geelong to win the premiership, you would have to be fairly confident of some success. Hawthorn, West Coast and Carlton would be considered roughies.

The list below is a quick rundown on how successful each ladder position has been in terms of premierships.

  • 1st - 64
  • 2nd - 32
  • 3rd - 10
  • 4th - 6
  • 5th - 2
