Betting on the NBL
Betting on the NBL is big business as basketball betting is such a diverse sport to wager on. There is plenty of ways for punters to find value when betting on the NBL, because often head to head betting is not the best bet type.
The reason basketball betting is so popular is because punters can analyse past results more accurately than most other sports when predicting winners. Punters will analyse matches by looking at things such as point spreads, shooting accuracy, home and away form, winning margins, and injuries to key players. Because there are only 5 players on a court, all these things make a big impact to the outcome, plus scoring trends with basketball matches are usually very consistent.
One of the more popular bet types are point spreads, meaning you’d back a team on a handicap rather than an outright win. The bookies generally get the spread about right, but there are many times where value sticks out. If your not confident on picking the winner you can also look at the match spread, whereby you wager on the total amount of points score in the match rather than a team.
In the NBL, the home court advantage is crucial. The home fans are often referred to as a teams ‘sixth player’. As the league covers area all over Australia as well as Singapore and New Zealand, teams will go on road trips often playing 3-5 games on the road in a short space, this is where fatigue will set in. Look for teams that have a deep bench because these are the teams that will always have success. Teams with solid defences or strong attacks will be the teams that are more consistent.

About the NBL
Australia’s premier basketball league is the National Basketball League (NBL) and consists of 13 teams. The NBL was created in 1979 and was held in winter until the 1997/98 season where it switched to a summer competition, this was an attempt to avoid competing directly with Australia’s football codes.
The 13 teams currently in the league now cover most parts of Australia, on top of that there are also teams in New Zealand and even Singapore. Singapore entered the league in 2006/07 and reached the playoffs in their first year, the NBL were the first Australian sporting league to expand into Asia. The Gold Coast Blaze are the newest team to enter the competition after debuting in season 2007/08.
Throughout the history of the NBL, many teams have now become defunct due to such reasons as mergers, financial instability, loss of license, etc. As many as 28 teams have come and gone over the years, and this decade many new teams have been introduced to the league including Cairns, Gold Coast, New Zealand, Singapore and South Dragons. In season 2004/05 the NBL signed a multi million dollar deal with Pay TV network Fox Sports which should help propel the league back to its glory days of the 1980’s and early 1990’s.
