Betting Guide » Types of Bets in Horse Racing

Win Only

If you place a bet on a runner to Win Only in an event, your runner must finish first or your bet is a loser.

Quinella

There are several forms of Quinella bets available. The most popular form is the "Standard Quinella" which is where you select two runners to finish as the top two place getters in an event in any order. A "Standout Quinella" is where you may select as many runners in an event as you like, however you must nominate one runner who you think will finish either first or second, while any of your other selections must finish first or second in correspondence to your nominated runner. A "Box Quinella" is where you select select three or more runners from an event, however two of your selection must finish first or second in any order to be successful.

Exacta

An exacta is deemed successful if the first two place getters in an event are selected by the punter in order. For example, if placed an exacta and picked Horse A to come first and Horse B to come second, for your bet to be a winner these horses must finish in order. A lot of bookies also allow you to bet on Standout & Box Exactas which follow the same concept explained in "Quinellas" above.

Trifecta

A Trifecta is where you must select three runners in a race and they must place in exact order. For example if you place a Trifecta for Horse A to come first, Horse B to come second and Horse C to come third, for your bet to be successful your horses must place as Horse A, Horse B, Horse C in that order. A lot of bookies also allow you to bet on Standout & Box Trifecta’s which follow the same concept explained in "Quinellas" above.

First Four

Some bookies allow the First Four type bet. To be successful with a First Four, you must select four runners and place them in exact order from first to fourth. The dividends are usually very attractive for this type of bet due to the difficulty of bet.

Daily Double

A Daily Double is where you select one runner from two selected feature races where both selections must be the first place getter to be successful. For example, if the Daily Double is for Race 6 & 7 at Flemington, you must pick both the winner from Race 6 & Race 7 to be a winner.

Quaddie

A Quaddie is similar to the Daily Double, but requires you to pick four winning runners over 4 feature races selected by the bookmaker you are betting with. For example, if the Quaddie is for Races 2, Race 4, Race 6 & Race 7 at Mooney Valley, you must select the winner for each race to be successful.

Best Fluctuation

The Best Fluctuation, or Best Fluc or Top Fluc as its commonly known, is available on most metropolitan races and pays the best of the official bookmakers fluctuations. Most online bookmakers in Australia who offer Best Fluc allow bets to be taken up to 30 minutes prior to the commencement of the race.
