Brownlow Medal Betting

The Brownlow Medal is the highest and most prestigious individual award a player can win in the AFL. It has been awarded to the Best and Fairest player in the AFL since 1924 and some of the greatest ever players have won the award.

It is now one of the biggest nights of the footy calendar and is traditionally held on the Monday night before the AFL Grand Final. It is very popular with punters too with million outlaid on betting markets each year.

2011 Brownlow Medal

Dual Brownlow Medallist Chris Judd opened as favourite after his surprise win last year. Dane Swan was raging favourite and one of the shortest priced favourites in recent memory, but was upstaged by Judd who has a stunning year. I can definitely see him winning his third this year with Carlton set to improve again.

Collingwood duo Dane Swan and Scott Pendlebury will go very close as they are both stars, will be in winning teams most weeks and get plenty of the ball. Jobe Watson of Essendon is one to watch out for also.

Joel Selwood had a super season and proved he is a big vote getter, so definitely pay close attention to him. Matthew Boyd goes under the radar a bit at the Western Bulldogs, but is another who polled well last year and will be in contention.

How to Spot Winners

There is no exact science to picking a Brownlow Medal winner, as the umpires are the ones who make the votes. But there are definitely things you can look for and use as a general guide when trying to pick Brownlow winners.

Firstly, always be sure to back midfielders. The award is pretty much a midfielders award with key position players or forwards rarely winning. Also whether it be by coincidence or not, bald or blonde headed players seem to poll very well too, so maybe keep an eye on little things like this.

Rarely will a Brownlow winner come from a team who miss the Finals. In fact every player over the last decade has come from a team in the finals, with 8 of the last 10 players coming from the team who contested the Grand Final.

Also, certain players seem to poll consistently well, while other players don’t seem to poll well. Chris Judd, Gary Ablett, Adam Goodes and Joel Selwood are players who poll well, even when they don’t play as well as expected.

Phantom Brownlow Medal

Another useful tool for predicting a Brownlow Medal winner is by doing a Phantom Brownlow Medal. We have done an article about Phantom Brownlow’s in the link provided.

We run a Phantom Brownlow here at Freebetinfo, whereby we analyse every match of the AFL season, award votes to players and then try and make winning bets on Brownlow night. In our three Phantom Brownlow’s to date, we have predicted two winners. Not a bad strike rate!
