Coleman Medal Betting

The Coleman Medal is a medal awarded in the AFL to the player who scores the most goals during the Home and Away Season. It does not take into account Finals.

It is a prestigious award named after prolific Essendon goalkicker John Coleman and was first awarded in 1981 with retrospective medals awarded back to 1955, the year in which Coleman retired.

2011 Coleman Medal

There are several leading candidates this year. Jack Riewoldt must be considered a big chance after a breakthrough year in 2010 where he won the Coleman Medal. With the Hawks looking for top four this year, expect Lance Franklin to get plenty of it and kick a few bags which he is more capable of doing.

Collingwood forwards Chris Dawes and Travis Cloke will have plenty of opportunities to score goals with the ball coming forward alot while small forwards like Jeff Gartlett, Stephen Milne, Eddie Betts and Mark LeCras can be dangerous too, if not a little inconsistent.

Hot To Spot Winners

Pretty much every Coleman Medal winner in the history of the award has come from a Full Forward, or a Forward. No player in recent history has come from the midfield or played any other position, so I’d recommend betting only on forwards.

Look for players who play in winning teams, as a look over the recent winners shows that nearly all of them come via clubs who win plenty of games. There are some exceptions, but this is generally a good rule.

Gone are the days of 100+ goals a year forwards, normally a total of 80+ goals will have you in good stead to win the Coleman Medal. So look for players who get 3-4 goals a game on average and who have the ability to kick a bag of goals.

Coleman Medal History

Since 1988 only three players have won the Coleman Medal coming from a team outside the Finals, those players being Jack Riewoldt (2010), Jonathan Brown (2007) and Brendan Fevola (2006).

Only once in the past decade has a player score over 100 goals, with Lance Franklin scoring 102 goals in 2008. Interestingly Brendan Fevola scored 99 goals in that same season.
