Melbourne Cup 2011 Betting

The Melbourne Cup is Australia's greatest race, held on the first Tuesday of November every year. It is referred to the ‘Race That Stops The Nation’ and that’s exactly what it does, with the entire nation coming to a standstill to watch the race.

The race is a handicap held over a marathon distance of 3,200 metres with a field of 24 and prize money totalling $5.5 million.

Who Should I Bet With?

Tough choice, as all bookies offer a decent range of markets and good racing products. Actually it's not really a tough choice, Centrebet and Sportsbet are the two you should have an account with, particularly the latter.

Sportsbet offer a huge $300 in Free Bets to anyone who signs up before the Melbourne Cup, and Centrebet have a great offer where your first bet will be refunded upto $150 if it loses!

One particularly good offer from Sportsbet is that they are paying down to four places in the Melbourne Cup - the only bookie to do so. So if you're fancying an outsider and are having an each way flutter, why wouldn't you bet at Sportsbet!

How to pick a Melbourne Cup winner

The Million Dollar question...

There is no exact science to picking a Melbourne Cup winner, but a tactic that I like to use by narrowing down the field by selecting horses based on a certain criteria can definitely give you a much better shot at picking the Melbourne Cup winning horse.

If you take a look at trends over the last half century of the Melbourne Cup, you will find that the majority of horses who win the Melbourne Cup are usually won by 4yo, 5yo or 6yo colts or geldings. In the 149 years the Cup has been run, 4, 5 and 6 year olds have won a total of 114 races. The last 3yo to win was in 1941. Geldings and colts have won the majority of races.

History also shows us that the majority of winners carry between 50.0kg and 56.5kg and that 34 of the 149 winners have been favourites. So in other words, the favourite wins the Melbourne Cup 1 in every 4.38 years. Also worth noting is that the Starting Price of the winner is highly likely to be under $20.00.

So what does all this mean?

Simple really! Using the above key points, we can now narrow down the Melbourne Cup field to a select few horses, giving us more of a chance to back the eventual winner.

So when analysing the field, mark down horses which are either 4, 5 or 6 year old colts or geldings, are carrying between 50-56.5kg and are paying no more $20 with the bookmakers. Now you will have a small list of horses which you can back with a little more confidence, rather than picking a winner from the field of 24. Pay less attention to race favourites.

In summary, narrow down the Melbourne Cup field to the following:

  • 4yo, 5yo or 6yo colts or geldings
  • Carrying weight between 50.0kg and 56.5kg
  • Is paying under $20 with bookmakers
  • Pay less attention to the favourite
