Australian Racing Carnivals

Racing in Australia works in seasons, with the climate playing a large role in the organisation of the major racing carnivals, which are limited to the metropolitan race clubs where all Group 1 races are held. The Spring and Autumn Carnivals which are held in both Melbourne and Sydney are the two seasonal carnivals, with the Melbourne Spring Carnival one of the most popular racing carnivals on the planet featuring races such as the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate, among many others.

These carnivals include classic races for two and three year olds, weight for age events and handicaps, with all the Group 1 events taking place in these carnivals. Adelaide also has its carnival in Autumn, while Perth have their carnival over Summer during the holiday season and Tasmania having a short carnival in January. Brisbane traditionally has high summer rainfall, meaning their carnival is held in Winter and late Autumn.
